Kombucha mushrooms are grown in a mixture of sugar, vinegar and tea. They could become an interesting leather or plastic substitute in the future.
The natural colour of the scoby can be influenced either by the choice of tea or by adding organic colors such as red cabbage. After about four weeks, the mushroom is big enough and must be dried. As it loses a lot of water, it shrinks from a thickness of 2 cm to less than 1mm. Moistened, the material is transluscent and stable.
